Tue 27 Jul |
A dramatic 7 hour drive into the foothills of the Himalaya on the historic Hindustan - Tibet road. At Wangtu we turn into the spectacular Bhaba Valley. Heading north on an 'exciting' road we reach the drop off point at Kafnoo (2425m), a small village where we set up camp in the apple orchards.

Wed 28 Jul |
A short level walk leads to a boulder bridge. The trail leads through cultivated fields and mixed forests of conifers; here we may be lucky enough to find nomadic Gaddi shepherds with their flocks of sheep and goats.
Across the river is the village of Homte, the last village in the valley. We walk through forest and clearings where the villagers grow potatoes, buckwheat and apples. We cross some small streams and climb steeply for about 30 minutes passing meadows filled with wild flowers before reaching the village of Humtey.
The camp site is at Mulling (3200m) in a meadow with many alpine flowers. Good views of a range of unnamed peaks on the border between Kinnaur and Spiti, 5hrs hours walking.

Thu 29 Jul |
Our walk is through pastureland then a few miles beyond Mulling we cross the river on a rock bridge near Nehgul, the point where 2 large rivers meet. We climb steeply to camp at the Kara meadows (3500m) near the Government sheep farm.
The camp site is surrounded by snow capped peaks and is a little short of the base of Bhaba Pass. 3 - 4 hrs walking.

Fri 30 Jul |
A steady walk for about 4 hrs getting to camp for lunch at the base of Bhaba Pass, also known as Fustirang (3975m).
In the afternoon we will take an acclimatization walk towards the pass.

Sat 31 Jul |
An early start so that we can cross Bhaba Pass (4710m) by midmorning. The climb is steep but at the top we are rewarded by a stunning vista of Himalayan peaks. Snow can be expected on the pass, not a day to be without the correct gear in your pack!
We then begin a long descent to Bara Bulder (3963m). The terrain changes to the arid brown slopes of the Pin Valley which are in marked contrast to the alpine greenery so far.
The trail is rough until we reach Magrumste, the junction of three valleys, Namishkhargo, Pin Parvati and Tari Khargo.
Camp at Bara Bulder ( 3825m) is about 1 hour from here.

Sun 01 Aug |
Another early start to cross the stream when the level is low. We then follow a well defined undulating and gradual path to a nice campsite at Pharka (3710m) close to the village of Mud.
In the evening we will visit the village and small monastery. Mud is also the last village in the Spiti valley. 5 - 6hrs walk.

Wed 04 Aug |
Trek to the Base Camp. By now the team will be well acclimatized but care is needed at this altitude. The ascent phase will not be rushed, on the contrary, it is possible to gain the summit from base camp in one day but we will establish a high camp and summit from there. We may divide the party into two summit teams depending on how individuals are going.
|
| 13 |
Thu 05 Aug |
Acclimatization walk to include finding a site for the high camp.

Summit day!
Alpine start, head torches and a sense of humour a must!
If all goes according to plan we should be on the summit by mid morning. At almost 6000m we should have breathtaking views of the Tibetan plateu to the north and snow and ice covered Himalayan peaks to the west, south and east.
